Unit Plan

This unit will lead students towards an understanding of technology inventions and how they have impacted us individually, our communities and globally. The main activities and resources will be facilitated by internet research after which students will create a PowerPoint slide presentation and a wiki to express their learning and share with class members.

Day

Summary of the lessons

1

The teacher will begin the starting activity by instructing students to discuss various types of inventions and the inventors in their group. Students will begin to brainstorm and select an invention to research. During this secession students will fill out the Know and Want to Learn sections of their downloadable online KWL charts in preparation for the research.

Students will work with their partner to select two separate inventions from an Inventions Research list provided or choose one of thier own to begin the research on the internet. The students will use the pre-selected URLs, in adittion to their own website selections to start their research. Students in each group will collaborate to research using an Inventions Instruction sheet provided, which defines their research tasks. Teacher will remind students to review the Invention Instruction Sheet, evaluation forms, the PowerPoint Rubric, and Inventions Wiki Checklist to ensure that they are meeting the project's requirements.

Each student will read and record information about the invention and the inventor, download pictures and Utube videos to include in their PowerPoint presentations. Teacher will remind students that they need to collect information on the inventor, as well as information about how his or her invention used technology to change the world. Group members will need to be prepared to share the information they have gathered from their readings with their partners.

2

Students will share their findings with the other group member. The group should use their group conference area to discuss, and compile information to complete the Inventions Research Chart to display the most important findings. The Inventions Research Chart which will include information about the name and description of the invention, the name of the inventor(s), date or time period of the invention, place where the invention was accomplished, The reason/purpose of the invention, impact of the invention in a particular field (science, construction, etc.), impact of the invention in your personal life (job, education, family), and impact of the invention globally.

3

Students are allowed to prepare all documents, visuals and references for their PowerPoint. The students should use the Powerpoint Tutorials and refer to the PowerPoint Rubric provided to help create a visually appealing and informative PowerPoint slideshow.

4

Each group will be allowed to upload their completed PowerPoint presentation for peer-review and feedback. Other students will be prompted to pose questions and comments about the invention from the uploaded presentations. They will also be required to provide peer feedback to at least 2 other student in the class and respond to questions that others may have about their presentation.

5

After peer-review and feedback is complete, each student will revise their PowerPoint slide presentation and make necessary corrections.

Students will now use the Inventors research chart as a guide to prepare and record information to create their individual wiki page. The teacher will upload the graphic organizer for the students to use. This will continue in the next session.
