Content Standards:

 

Relevant state standard for the grade level intended for this module comes from Maryland State Department of Education: Grade 9 Technology Education Standards (2005), which include:

  • Develop an understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political effects of technology. (ITEA, STL 4)
  •  
  • Develop an understanding of the effects of technology on the environment. (ITEA, STL 5)
  •  
  • Develop an understanding of the role of society in the development and use of technology. (ITEA, STL 6)
  •  
  • Develop an understanding of technology on history. (ITEA, STL 7)
  •  
  • Develop an understanding of troubleshooting, research and development, invention and innovation, and experimentation in problem solving. (ITEA, STL 10)
  • Develop an understanding of the nature, characteristics and scope of technology. (ITEA, STL 1)

  • Develop an understanding of the relationships among technologies and the connections between technology and other fields of study. (ITEA, STL 3)

National Education Technology Standard for Students NETS:

Relevant Student Performance standards is taken from ISTE (2007),NETS for students which include:

  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Communication and Collaboration

o   interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of

o   digital environments and media

o   develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures

o   contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems

  • Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
  • Digital Citizenship

o   advocate and practice the safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology

o   exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity

o   exhibit leadership for digital citizenship

Technology Use:

  • Students will use an Avatar (Voki) to introduce themselves
  • Utube and other videosharing websites will be used to share examples of completed projects.
  • Students will conduct internet research
  • Students will work in pairs to collaborate on a wiki to publish and edit their information about local developments.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint will also be used to express research findings.

Essential Questions:

  • What are some of the significant technological Inventions and innovations that have impacted our environment?
  • In general, would you say that modern technology developed over the past fifty years has made the world a better or worse place in which to live?
  • Are people's lives happier or unhappier as a result of modern technology?
  • How some of these technologies impacting the way we are educated, entertained, transported, accommodated or employed.
  • What are some of ways in which some of the technological inventions/innovations negatively impacted the society?
  • What do you envision as future uses of these technologies in our everyday lives?
  • How would you contrast the pros and cons of technological inventions in organizing our daily schedules?
